Creating an oasis in a previously unused space

20260730_114359_edited.jpg

This is a beautiful space that was not being utilized.  It is full sun on the right and late day shade on the left.  Garden to Fork worked with the new gardener to explore designs, usage of the space, and garden layout.  We created a welcoming layout that was visually appealing from the house and incorporated a sitting area.  We marked out the beds and did a physical walk through and made final adjustments.  The gardeners did the heavy lifting themselves and built 5 beautiful raised beds.  The gardeners were very open to trying different types of vegetables so we planned an adventurous array of vegetables. Garden to Fork provided monthly coaching on planting, pruning, pest management, and harvesting.  The season ended with a year end review and creation of a planting plant to set them up for success in the following year.

The gardeners embraced gardening and now have a beautiful, inviting space with a sitting area in the shade from where to admire their abundance of food that they grew themselves.

Challenges:  Every garden and every season has challenges.  This garden had very few.  The biggest challenge was the cabbage worms, it was a very bad year for them.  The solutions was regular spraying which helped but some brassica plants didn't thrive.  If large brassicas are planted again (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbages, Brussel sprouts, kale) growing them under cover will help.  Either the whole bed or covering the single plant.

Coaching an avid flower gardener to start growing vegetables

This gardener has beautiful flower gardens and loves spending time tending to them.  She is also loves to cook.  It was a natural fit for her to start growing her own vegetables.  Garden to Fork worked with her to identify the best areas for her to build some Sproutbox raised vegetable beds as well as identify areas within her flower gardens where she can grow additional vegetables.  We started her cold tolerant seeds in the raised beds with a poly cover in April so she could start harvesting in May.  She also started seeds indoors to transplant into her pots and flower garden in May and June.

She now has abundant vegetables, has started experimenting on her own, and is a vegetable gardener for life.

Challenges:  The challenge this gardener has with her inground beds is the dog.  He loves wandering through the beds, and loves to eat peas.  The solution was to build a third raised bed for the peas and plant large brassicas and squash in the gardens.

A beginner gardener, unsure where to start — but ready to grow.

This space was just asking for a vegetable garden to be built.  It was wide open with good sun exposure and a nice shaded area for cold tolerant vegetables and a sitting area.  This beginner gardener had a good eye for design.  We talked through ideas, reviewed design inspirations, and came up with a final plan that incorporated elements that complemented her large yard and the style of her home.

As a beginner gardener, she felt overwhelmed by growing her own vegetables — yet genuinely excited by the possibility.  Garden to Fork worked with her through all stages, and challenges, and she has embraced her new garden and is thrilled by the vegetables and herbs she is harvesting.

Challenges:  This was a brand new garden with fresh soil, and yet the pH was 4.5.  Some of her vegetables were growing but others weren't.  She had a zucchini plant that was perfect!  The solution was to add horticultural lime to raise the pH. She also had a cabbage worm infestation, the worst I've ever seen.  We tried spraying and covering but did lose some plants.  But, she also has the largest Brussel sprout plant I have seen, despite the low pH and the cabbage worms.

A new gardener who had a vision for her pots.

She wanted to start small with pots and had a great idea to have themes for each pot.  Garden to Fork recommended types of pots to purchase that suited her style and worked with her to plant.  Coaching on types of soil that are suitable for potting, how to choose plants, how to care for the plants, and harvesting.  We potted 5 pots:

  • 3 large pots:

    • Italian Garden - tomato, basil, marigolds

    • Greek Garden - pepper, oregano, alyssum

    • Mediterranean Garden - cucumber, thyme, nasturtium

  • 2 small pots:

    • Chives, parsley, sage, Swiss chard

    • Rosemary, mint, arugula, Swiss chard

Challenges:  This one is my favorite!  We planted a patio cucumber which is supposed to compact and suitable for pots. We were suspicious when it started trailing along the patio and even more suspicious when a yellow squash started growing!
